Labor Day Weekend

We left the race shop in Rapid City Thursday night about dark to drive part way to Marshalltown, Iowa,  Casey and Wade left early Friday morning.  We all got to the track mid afternoon Friday.  Marshalltown is eastern Iowa, right in the heart of the derecho wind storm that crushed the area 3 weeks ago.  Lots of evidence of damage all around - you've seen it on TV so no need for a lot of pics.

The track at Marshalltown is a high-bank 1/4 mile.  The IMCA car is the one Wade put together last week - a real feat - and the engine had not yet been started.   Casey, of course, had never driven the car.  He went out and won  our heat race on the maiden voyage!  Finished 6th in the Main, so all-in-all a really good night.  (There were 141 cars entered for this event, in several classes.)

Left Marshalltown yesterday morning, driving north to Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minnesota - a track which we raced earlier in the year.  Only a 4 hour drive through the countryside, so it was a relaxed, easy trek.  We will be racing the USMTS car as this is a points race for the Series.

At this high-bank 3/8 mile track, we started the Heat in 6th position and moved up four to finish in second.  Good driving effort.  We evidently missed the setup a little for the Main, finishing 17th out of 24 cars.  But got it done and got the car loaded up before a big-ass storm moved in last night.  This morning, actually, I guess. They know how to put on a lightning show here.  Wow!

Side Note:  At Marshalltown we pitted across from Shelby Frye, who we first met at Cocopah Speedway in Yuma, AZ when we camped next to her in January of this year.

Very nice young gal, and a good driver.  Fun to watch her race.  They had stopped at Marshalltown on their way to a big race which started last night in Boone, Iowa.  A really big race, which I think runs 4 or 5 days.  Last night they had a total of 412 cars registered in four classes.  No typo.  412 cars.  There are 120 Modifieds and 96 Northern Sport modifieds.  It's evidently quite a wild, chaotic event.  Heard a lot of stories last night about past activities there.  Maybe next year . . .

Today we move on to West Union Iowa to the Fayette County Speedway for the next USMTS race.  Only a couple of hours drive.  Nice!

Will fill you in on that when we can.

Happy Holiday!!
