A Little Break in the Action

As we mentioned earlier, our daughter Anna recently joined us for about 10 days on the race circuit.  This has been a hoot, as she adds a lot of enthusiasm, entertainment and humor to the mix.  Great fun.  She and Lorna observe each race from the spectator stands, while Doug works in the pits - occasionally joining them for a Heat Race or the Main. (This usually depends on the distance from pits to grandstands, which varies a lot from track to track.)

Her husband Todd drove last Friday from the Kansas City area - pulling their new toyhauler RV - to attend the Rock Rapids race and camp with us at the track.
This was the event where, just before the Mains for each division were to run, the skies darkened and lightning began in the distance.  With the first few drops of rain, we were busily loading everything into the race trailer:  car lift, tools, tires, tire cutting machine, etc., and finally the car (which takes a few minutes as it is rolled onto a lift which raises up to be rolled into the trailer above the ceiling of the shop.)  Casey had the diesel Toter (semi truck) running and lights on, ready to depart the track.  As I walked through the pits toward the stands, I hear them calling the Modified A Main Event to the track.

I walked to the stands to see what would happen.  Sure enough, by the time I'm seated some of the cars come rolling out onto the track.  Eventually, here comes Casey.  They had moved our race up in the schedule hoping to get it in before the rain.  It worked, and was a good night for us.

We camped that night in the rain and thunder, comfy in our respective rigs.  Drove south the next day, planning on staying at a campground in Beatrice, NE.  On arrival, as we turned toward the park we were blocked by barricades.  The campground, as we learned from a local there, had been hurriedly evacuated earlier that day due to rising river water.  We drove on, noting that river camping might not be our smartest plan.

After a couple more driving hours, with no sightings of RV parks or campgrounds, we end up in the neat little town of Marysville, KS.  Fun place to visit, if you've never been there - more on that later.  Camped in their city park with electric hookup (20/30/50 amp), water, and a dump station to boot!  And it's FREE!  Terrific camping spot.
Margaritas and Mexican food for dinner!

Todd and Anna returned home from there, and we headed for Stillwater to collect some things we had stored there.  On to Durango tomorrow.    Thanks for checking in!!
